Agatha Patricia Schroeder

Agatha Schroeder April 20th, 1913 – February 19th, 2019

Agatha was born in Poudroyne, West Bank, Demerara, Guyana, on April 20th, 1913. Having apprenticed under the top seamstress/designer of the time, she worked in this occupation after moving to Georgetown, Guyana’s capital.

She married George Alfred Schroeder and raised 7 children. She and George emigrated to Canada in the 1970’s. She was grandmother to 15, great grandmother to 19 and great-great grandmother to 4. Her children, grands, great grands and great-great grandchildren live in Guyana, Antigua, Canada, America, Italy, and France.

At the age of 65, Agatha returned to school to do a 2 year course in Health Care at Centennial College in Toronto. This had been an earlier professional dream if hers – a dream she was able to pursue in Canada, after having left school 50 years before. Her certificate takes pride of place on her living room wall as a means of inspiring her grands and great grandchildren. She was a firm believer in the saying: “It’s never too late”. She went on to a fulfilling career in health care, retiring at the age of 72.

Upon arrival in Toronto, Agatha joined and became and active member of the Senior Guyanese Association, as well as the Catholic Women’s League. In her 90’s, after the death of her husband, she began writing inspirational poems. Always a woman of faith, her words of upliftment and encouragement are a treasure for those fortunate to have received them. Even at 105, her wisdom was sought after and her strong faith in God, a beacon of light for those who continued to reach out to her.

She will be greatly missed.
