James Terence (Terry) HANES

HANES, James Terence (Terry) September 25, 1922-January 14, 2019 Terry Hanes passed away peacefully in his 97th year.

Beloved husband of Vi, loving father of Carolyn Major (Doug), and the late Barbara Hanes-Kennedy (Jim), devoted grandpa of Jennifer Wilson (Mark), Katie Major-Austin (Jamie), Patrick Kennedy and Adam Kennedy; and adoring great-grampy to Finley, Braeden and Isaac. He will be remembered fondly by his extended family including his many nieces and nephews.

Born in Toronto, Terry graduated from Lawrence Park Collegiate and enlisted with the Canadian Armed Forces at age 18 to assist in the war effort. After training, he was stationed in Australia and the South Pacific for the duration of WWII where he installed and maintained radar and radio equipment, gathering radio messages from the region and transmitting them to the allies. He completed an engineering degree (University of Toronto) in 1950 and went on to be employed at General Electric and Canadian Arsenals (5 years) before embarking on a long career in education, retiring in 1982 as a Superintendent of Schools for the Etobicoke Board of Education.

A man of many interests, Terry enjoyed playing the bagpipes for many years in the Richmond Hill Legion Pipe Band, donating the proceeds from his solo engagements to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation in memory of his daughter Barb. During his long and active retirement, he continued to view life as an endless educational opportunity enjoying many years of travelling, a love of electronics and computers, teaching bagpipes to young people, learning French, playing the organ as well as the bagpipes, writing his memoirs, exploring world history, gardening and spending time with family and friends.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life service will be held at a future date.
