Joseph Patrick WOODS

WOODS, Joseph Patrick Joseph Patrick Woods died peacefully July 10, 2018 at Chester Village Long Term Care in Toronto, Ontario.

Joe’s long and full life started in Halifax in 1925. He was the oldest brother to nine siblings; many of whom still fondly called him “Joey”, even at 92. In the early years of what was to be a very long career with the Canadian Armed Forces, he landed a posting in Germany where he met the love of his life, Gerda. They enjoyed 53 years of married life prior to Gerda’s passing in 2010. Together they travelled the world managing to visit Europe (often), Australia, Asia and South Africa as well as exploring the less traveled roads of Canada, the US and Mexico. After Joe’s retirement from the military, Joe and Gerda put down roots in London, Ontario, until moving to Toronto in 2006 to be closer to family.

Joe was an ever supportive father to sons Patrick and Peter (Kathy). In the past several years, most summers were spent in the peaceful setting of Muskoka enjoying quality time with granddaughter Naomi and getting away from the big city. Grandsons Jason, Darian and Braden made the trek from Australia to join the summer fun not too many years ago. Having been a boxer and goalie, Joe was a well-rounded athlete and avid sports fan. There was not a sport he didn’t excel at or enjoy watching. Although he made a solid effort to support the hometown Leafs, he was always a Canadiens fan at heart. Joe even managed to attend an outing to a Blue Jays game only a few short weeks ago. Joe could always be counted on to crack a joke even when he wasn’t up to his usual self, which endeared him to those around him.

Above all else, Joe will be remembered for his giving and generousity. “Let me know if I can help” will be the phrase that we remember with love in years to come. While Joe will be missed by all, we are grateful for his life and for the peaceful conclusion to it. Many thanks to Chester Village for supporting Joe through the more difficult times in the past few months.

As Joe never liked being the centre of attention, a private family interment will be held at Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Toronto. Donations to the Alzheimers Society of Canada are always welcomed.
