MURPHY, Lawrence Joseph

MURPHY, Lawrence Joseph It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of Larry Murphy. He died peacefully, at home, on April 16th, surrounded by the love of his family, after a long struggle to overcome the effects of a devastating stroke.

From humble beginnings in the North End of Hamilton, Larry grew up with hard work in his genes, working in the family’s famous Murphy’s 12″ Hotdog Stand, then Dofasco, and on to St. Mary’s University, McGill, Rice, and McMaster, where he earned his PhD in economics.

Predeceased by Jeannie (nee Claremont) who he met as a teenager. They married in 1966, and built a happy home with their daughter Carolyn at the centre. Larry’s discipline, keen mind, and ambition led him to a career as an economist at the federal Ministry of Finance, VP of the Conference Board of Canada, Chief Economist at Gulf Oil, and finally, to his own firm, Henley International. He never retired. He lived an active life and spent many years rowing with the Leander Boat Club, where he served as Vice-President. He loved to travel with his beloved Jinx, who he met while volunteering at USC Canada, and spent many happy winters with her in Australia.

Larry will be deeply missed by grandsons Ben and Davey, son-in-law Dan, many family and friends, and all who knew him.

Funeral mass at St. Lawrence the Martyr, 125 Picton St E, Hamilton, Friday, April 26th at 11 a.m. Wake at 1pm, Leander Boat Club.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada.
