Solvig Ingalill Buckingham

SOLVIG INGALILL BUCKINGHAM Passed away at Trinity Village Care Centre in Kitchener on September 30th, 2018. Born in Malmo, Sweden on February 16th, 1926 to Johan and Hulda Nelson and emigrated to Winnipeg in l928. Predeceased by her brother, Bengt and sisters, Elsie and Marian. Survived by brother, Bob (Lena). Dearly loved wife of Victor who predeceased her on February 10th, 2010. Loving mother of Victor (Linda) and Johanne (Jeff) and wonderful grandmother to Krysten.

Solvig met Vic in 1944 in Gimli, Manitoba where he had been sent to learn how to fly as part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. They were married within 6 months on September 9th. Vic returned to England in October with Solvig following in January 1945. Vic went on to participate as a glider pilot in Operation Varsity in March 1945. They settled in Slough, Buckinghamshire where Solvig became an elementary school teacher, having completed her training at Normal School in Winnipeg. Wanting to be nearer her family, and preferring Victor and Johanne attend school in Canada, Solvig and Vic returned to Canada in 1957 and set up home in Richmond Hill. They were both active members of the United Church and, for several years, Solvig worked in the Research Library at CIL in Toronto where Vic worked as an Analytical Chemist. In 1981, Solvig and Vic moved to Aurora where they enjoyed membership in the Royal Canadian Legion and the Seniors Centre, making many good friends. They travelled every year with a seniors’ touring group, Solvig, in particular, befriending nearly everyone she met. Solvig was strong, stoic and sentimental; content with her own company but also loved a party; above all, generous and kind to everyone. She sometimes had a fierce exterior but always a big heart inside. Her passions included her family, friends, and reading the Toronto Star from beginning to end.

Following Vic’s passing in 2010, Solvig moved to Holland View Trail Retirement Centre without a backward glance. In failing health, she moved to Clair Hills Retirement Centre in Waterloo, and, finally, to Trinity Village Care Centre in Kitchener. Her family is very grateful for the compassionate care she received there.

Funeral service to be held at Thompson Funeral Home, 530 Industrial Parkway South, Aurora on Thursday, October 11th at 11:00am. Visitation 10:00am – 11:00am. Refreshments will be served at the funeral home at 12:30 following interment at Aurora Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity Village Care Centre or a charity of your choice.
