VOLK, Sister Evelyn, School Sister of Notre Dame

VOLK, Sister Evelyn, School Sister of Notre Dame Died at Notre Dame Convent, Waterdown, Ontario on Monday, January 14, 2019 at the age of 99 and in the 81st year as a School Sister of Notre Dame.

Predeceased by her parents George and Magdeline (Senger) Volk, her brothers, Albert and Joseph and sisters, Sister Beatrice Volk SSND, and Mary Glatt. Lovingly remembered by the members of her congregation, and her sisters, Evelyn Botham, Anne Brin, Marjorie Tiffin, Patricia Ackerman, Marlene Pulak and Janet Putnam.

Sister Evelyn was a talented artist. During her years as receptionist at Notre Dame Convent, Waterdown from 1938-1959 she took art lessons and assisted with paintings for local churches. From 1959 – 1964 Sister Evelyn was sacristan at the Cathedral of Christ the King, Hamilton, as well as teaching art. In 1964 she moved to Welland. Here she continued teaching art to children and adults. She encouraged her students to express their inner feelings in creative forms of art. She advanced her own artistic skills by taking art courses and entering local art festivals. Frequently, her skill at calligraphy was commissioned to design cards and posters for special occasions. In 1978 she returned to Notre Dame Convent where she was assistant leader. Beginning in 1982 Sister Evelyn became involved in pastoral ministry in Aroland and in Saskatchewan, Saskatoon and Kerrobert. While in Kenora Sister Evelyn was an active member of the Kenora Artists Association. In 2002 she moved from St. Anne’s Kitchener to Notre Dame Convent, Waterdown where she continued to share her artistic gifts with others.

Visitors will be received at Notre Dame Convent on Friday, January 18 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 7:00-8:00 p.m. Prayer service will be held on Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Notre Dame Convent on Saturday, January 19 at 10:30 a.m. Interment at Notre Dame Convent Cemetery.
