ANNIE”NAN” (CULLEN) HOLYSH

ANNIE “NAN” HOLYSH (nee CULLEN) Nan died in Oakville, Ontario on August 16, 2016 at the age of 88 after an eight-year struggle with Alzheimer’s. Nan was born in Glasgow, Scotland on January 6, 1928 and although many of her friends back home considered her a shy lass, she mustered the courage to leave Springburn and immigrate to Toronto, Canada in 1956. Shortly after starting work at Toronto City Hall, she met Basil Holysh while dancing at the Palais Royale on Lakeshore. In 1958 she married the hard- working, entrepreneurial Ukrainian immigrant. She was a devoted stay-at-home Mum for many years, taking great pride in the achievements of her children. She flourished when she started a fulfilling second career working for Marks and Spencer at Toronto’s Eaton Centre. Her loyal customers relied upon her sharp eye to pick out and match the perfect shirt and tie. Nan remained a voracious reader for as long as she was able and exhibited a lifelong commitment to her Catholic faith. Nan is survived by her children: Victor (Linda McDonald), Martin (Heidi), Steven (Andrea Bradford) and Linda (Troy Wilson), her ten grandchildren and sister, Moyra Cullen in Glasgow. She was predeceased by Basil in 2014 and their youngest son, Philip, in 2009 and her brothers James and Martin. A celebration of Nan’s life will take place at SMITH’S FUNERAL HOME, 1167 Guelph Line, Burlington, on Monday, August 22nd at 1:00 p.m. Visitation will take place Sunday, August 21st from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Nan’s memory to the Alzheimer Society or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated. The family extends their thanks to the dedicated caregivers at Wyndham Manor.
