BEGG, Ian Maynard Died Monday June 27, 2016 at Juravinski Hospital after a brief but sudden illness at the age of 71. Beloved husband for seventeen years of Laurie Chadwick. Dear father of Erik Jansen Begg (Nina) and Heather Bronwen Michlik (Mark) of Burlington. Dear grandfather of Melissa, Madeleine, Connor, Emily, Liam, and Tessa. Brother of the late Robin Begg (2012) of London, ON, Richard Begg of Ottawa, and Geoffrey Begg of Niagara Falls. Dear uncle to many beloved nieces and nephews. Pre- deceased by his parents Vera Maynard Begg (nee Foster) and John Arthur Begg. He will be deeply missed by his wife and family and also by many colleagues, clients and friends, near and far. Greatly missed also by his four beloved cats Benny, Grey Ghost, Casper and Joni Mitchell. Born March 6, 1945 in Selby, Yorkshire, England. Ian grew up in Chatham, ON where he graduated from Chatham Collegiate Institute in 1963. He was school valedictorian, earning a school letter and an Ontario Scholarship. He attended University of Western Ontario, receiving his BA in 1967, MA in 1969, and PhD in Psychology in 1971. He was hired by McMaster University in 1971 as Assistant Professor of Psychology, became Associate Professor in 1976 and Professor in 1981, a post he held until his retirement in 1998. Graduated from University of Toronto Law School in 1998 and was called to the bar in 2000. Employed as associate with Dean D. Paquette until 2006, when he began a private practice that he continued until his death. Played Oldtimer Hockey from 1980 until 2012 with the Burlington Oldtimers. He remained an avid fan of punk music, a love he shared with his Son Erik. (Gabba Gabba Hey!) Ian was a proud vegetarian since 1974 and was a great lover of animals. His wish was that everyone would adopt a stray cat. The family would like to thank all the wonderful, caring nurses, doctors and staff at Juravinski Hospital. As per Ian’s wishes cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, July 7, 2016 from 5-7 p.m. at Tailgate Charlie’s in Hamilton. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada.
