BridgetElixabeth Joy REES

REES, Bridget Elixabeth Joy Born October 22, 1927, Dun Laoghaire, Ireland, passed peacefully at Belmont Place, Toronto, surrounded by her family. Only child of Richard and Anne Smeltzer, Bridget grew up in Woodford Green, London, where she attended St. Mary’s Convent School for Girls. At 19, she worked for Burma Shell in Bermuda for two years. In 1953 she moved to Montreal and married Donald Marcus Rees (deceased May 25, 2007) before moving to Toronto. In 1977 she graduated from Centennial College as a counsellor for people with intellectual disabilities. By 1978, she was the Program Manager and Supervisor for Community Living’s largest Toronto residence. She was widely respected and received the Hilda Houghton award from Community Living in recognition of her tireless advocacy for people with intellectual disabilities. Throughout her life, Bridget was loved by her large circle of friends for her wit, humour and personality. She was well travelled, well read and a devoted attendee of the Toronto Film Festival. She is survived: by her children Melinda (Christopher), Mark (Donna), Claudia (Fawad), Owen and six grandchildren. She will be deeply missed. Donations can be made to Community Living Toronto.
