DILJIT S. JUNEJA
Diljit S. Juneja of Toronto, Canada and Orlando, Florida, died on Friday, November 11, 2016, in Orlando three days from his 94th birthday. Mr. Juneja was born in Peshawar, India. The eldest of eight siblings, Mr. Juneja earned a bachelor’s degree from Punjab University, a master’s degree in mathematics at Islamia College, Peshawar, became a professor of mathematics, and rose to become Dean of Arts and Sciences at Khalsa College, Delhi. When his Sikh relatives were forced to flee their homes during the partition of India, Mr. Juneja, now the sole support for an entire extended family, focused his studies on actuarial science, becoming in 1956 the first Sikh actuary in India. In 1965 Mr. Juneja immigrated to Canada to take a position as an actuary in the Toronto branch of William H. Mercer Ltd. He rose to become President of Mercer Canada, and in 1982 moved to New York, where he was President and CEO of William M. Mercer worldwide. He was also on the Board of Marsh & McLennan Companies. He retired in 1989.
A lover of intellectual discussion, literature, theater, film, fine food, and wine, Mr. Juneja was renowned among his many friends and colleagues for his intelligence, intellectual curiosity, wisdom, compassion, and most of all for the deep and genuine interest he took in everyone he met. He will be remembered by legions of employees, colleagues, and friends across continents for the difference he made in their lives.
A deeply loving husband to Gulshan Juneja, who passed away after 54 years of marriage, and to his cherished partner of the last 18 years, Champa Nambiar, Mr. Juneja will live on in the memories of Champa, his son, Ravi and his wife Aneeta, his daughter Nita and her husband Charles, his grandsons, Raoul, Laurence, and Spencer, his sisters Minnie Chug, and Rita Chug, his brother Kanwaljit and his extended family.
The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES – NEWBIGGING CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 7:00-8:30 p.m. on Friday, November 18th. Funeral service and cremation on Saturday, November 19th; receiving at 11:00 a.m. and ceremony at noon, at MOUNT PLEASANT CREMATORIUM, 375 Mount Pleasant Road, Toronto, with a reception to follow at the Granite Club, 2350 Bayview Ave, North York.
