DOLORESRAMSAY

DOLORES RAMSAY The family and friends of Dolores Ramsay mourn her passing on August 27, 2016 at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto where she received the best care we could have hoped for. We are forever grateful. Born in Brooklyn, NY, on November 4, 1930, she was the only child of William and Emily Belt. Dolores grew up in walking distance of Ebbets Field and never saw the Dodgers play baseball; but decades later became an enthusiastic fan of the Toronto Blue Jays. Her grandmother and parents emigrated from Latvia to the USA shortly after the end of the first World War and settled in Brooklyn. After graduating from high school, she attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York on a scholarship and subsequently was hired as a women’s swimwear designer at Parform. Within two years her designs had become noticed and admired in the industry. One of her suits appeared on the cover of Esquire magazine. Also, a large billboard of her designs hung prominently in Grand Central Station. Her sense of style remained an important part of her essence to the very end and she rarely left her condo without giving due thought to the selection of her scarf, hat and other accessories. In the early 1990s, she joined the Art Gallery of Ontario as a docent and for the next 20 years she gave tours of the paintings and sculptures. She reveled in giving tours and also in the hours of study required. She counted these years as some of the happiest of her life. Dolores leaves behind her loving husband Jim, three children Donna (nee Atkinson, George), Bruce and Rob (Joanne Fagan) and five grandchildren Spencer Atkinson, Adam Atkinson, Adrienne Atkinson, Jillian Ramsay and Owen Ramsay. We will all miss her greatly. A memorial service will be held in Dolores’ honour on Saturday, September 10th at 11:00 a.m. at Bloor Street United Church, 300 Bloor Street West, Toronto. A light lunch reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, a charitable donation may be made in Dolores’ memory to Alzheimer’s research at www.alzheimer.ca and click the donate button.
