Newman, Donald Ray (1927-2017)

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Donald Newman on January 14, 2017 at Southlake Regional Hospital. He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Marion Newman (Hutchison), his five children; Louise Zerter (Bill); Ray Newman (Susan); Beth Mocherniak (Bo); Richard Newman (Azmina) and Jim Newman (Vanessa). He was a proud grandfather of Liam, Stephanie, Rebecca, Emily, Andrew, Laura, Lindsey, Sarah, Anisa, Matthew, Jonathan and Julia and great grandfather to Isla and Maren. He will be missed by his brother Scott (Elaine) and sister in law, Florence Newman.
After the death of his first wife – Ruth (Jennett) Newman in 2000, Don married Ruth’s very close friend Marion Richardson in 2003. They embarked on a new life together and provided each other with love and companionship for over 13 years. He felt very blessed to have those years with Marion and he became very attached to members of her family.
Don graduated from Commerce at Victoria College, University of Toronto, in 1950. He joined Bell Canada, a company that he served until his retirement in 1991. At the time of his retirement he had the position of Vice President and Comptroller of BCE. He was a member of the Financial Executives Institute, the Tax Executives Institute and the Telephone Pioneers of America. He served on numerous Boards during his career including Northern Telephone Limited, Newfoundland Telephone Company Limited and NewTel Enterprises Limited.
Don was an excellent card player, and spent many enjoyable hours at the Aurora Seniors Centre competing in duplicate bridge. He was also an avid gardener and loved to putter at the cottage working on a vegetable garden, which he later converted to an abundant flower garden. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing in his active years, reminiscent of his days growing up on a farm in Dunnville, Ontario.
Friends may call at the Thompson Funeral Home, 530 Industrial Parkway South, Aurora (905 727-5421) on Tuesday January 17 from 5-8pm. A Funeral Service will be held at Trinity Anglican Church, 79 Victoria Street, Aurora on Wednesday January 18 at 11am. Reception to follow. A private family interment will be held at Aurora Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations to Southlake Regional Health Centre Foundation would be appreciated. On-line condolences may be left at www.thompsonfh-aurora.com
