Dr.Janet McGoey

Dr. Janet MCGOEY, FRCP(C)

1918 – 2017

Died peacefully at home on Friday, January 27. Predeceased by her beloved husband Dr. Paul McGoey, May 30, 1984. Devoted mother of Paul (Marie McMullin), the late Mary, Frances (Harold Crawley), Helen (Ian Gibson), Joan (Allan Hardy), Janet, Louise (Peter McCallum), Brian (Elisabeth McGregor), Christine (Michael Brown), Stephen, and Jon (Dawn); grandmother of 28 and great-grandmother of 26.

Janet grew up in the village of Aberfoyle, Scotland with her mother, brother James, aunts, uncles and her revered grandmother Janet Johnson. Encouraged by the local doctor and her favourite uncle Jimmy, she attended medical school at Glasgow University, a feat made possible by a Carnegie scholarship and her own determination. She completed her surgical internship in 1941, when she was sent to Hairmyres Hospital to work in General surgery. Meanwhile, the Secretary of Scotland requested that a Canadian Orthopaedic unit be sent to Hairmyres to treat the war wounded, and Paul McGoey was a senior intern in this unit. Paul and Janet met at Hairmyres in 1942. They married on May 10, 1943, each returning to the O.R. after their wedding. Their first child, Paul, was born in June of 1944, and they came to live in Toronto later that year. Janet qualified to practise in Canada, and after the youngest of their 11 children, Jon, began school, she worked as a surgical assistant to Paul and several other orthopaedic surgeons until she retired at age 70. Janet’s greatest blessing was her happy marriage, and her continuing joy was welcoming her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren into our family.
