Dr.Joseph J. CARROLL

CARROLL, Dr. Joseph J. May 28, 1925 – April 9, 2017 We are saddened to announce the peaceful death of Joseph Carroll in his 92nd year at home on April 9, 2017 surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his soul mate, companion and partner, Susan Nucci, and his four children, Judy (George McGowan); Jo (Steve Munro); Christopher (Sandra) and Sandra Shields (Leo Ezerins); and his sister, Mary-Ellen Thompson. Also surviving him are his nine grandchildren – Jessie and Abby Munro; Davis and John Carroll; Andrew (Christian Giannotti) and J.J. Shields; Sophie (Patrick) O’Sullivan; Dianna and Christopher Jewell and 2 great-grandchildren, Henry and Nathan O’Sullivan; also step-grandchildren, Alex Emma and Hannah Vrbetic. He was predeceased by his first wife, Edwina Carroll (1975), his daughter, Linda Jewell (2005); his son, Mark Carroll (2010) and his sister, Theresa Kennedy (2008). Dr. Carroll served in the RCAF during the Second World War from 1943-1946. After the war, he returned to his birthplace, Cornerbrook, NFLD where he attended Memorial University. He then went to Dalhousie Medical School. He pursued his surgical residency in Chicago, IL and became a General Surgeon, who practiced his specialty in Hamilton, Ontario from 1957-1996, primarily at St. Joseph’s Hospital. After he closed his active practice, he continued to assist with surgeries until the age of 75. At Joe’s request, his body has been donated to the McMaster University, Faculty of Health Sciences, Education Program in Anatomy. Visitation will take place at P.X. DERMODY FUNERAL HOME, 796 Upper Gage Ave., Hamilton, Ontario on Tuesday, April 11, 2017 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 260 Herkimer Street, Hamilton Ontario on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at 10 a.m. A reception to follow and the location will be announced. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Aplastic Anemia Myelodysplasia Association of Canada (AAMAC.ca), St Joseph’s Hospital, Department of Surgery, Hamilton, ON or the charity of your choice.
