ELEANORMARIE O’DWYER

ELEANOR MARIE O’DWYER Eleanor passed away suddenly on Monday, December 26, 2016, in her 82nd year. Eleanor Marie O’Dwyer was born in Buffalo, New York, on June 13, 1934, the first of eleven children of Henrietta and Joseph Glair. She is survived by Frances (Robert) Gall, John (Sandy) Glair, Thomas (Patricia) Glair, Paul (Nancy) Glair, Loretta (Murray) Regan, Marie Glair, Michael (Nancy) Glair and predeceased by Sr. Henrietta RSM, Joseph Glair Jr. and Theresa (Edward) Lillis. She was the devoted spouse of Dr. Michael Gerald O’Dwyer (Gerry) and loving mother of Michael (Elizabeth), Joseph (Cheryl), William, John (Amy) and Daniel (Dawn). Her greatest pride and joy were her 11 grandchildren Shawn, Christie, David, Shannon, Michael, William, Colin, Erin, Charlotte, Nicholas and Alexander. Grandma always had time for her grandchildren to share and guide in their growth and development. Eleanor was always a gifted student, earning scholarships all through her academic career. She studied at Mount Mercy Hospital Nursing School, D’Youville College and Canisius College in Western New York. She worked and taught nursing at Mount Mercy Hospital where she subsequently met a Canadian intern who was to become her future husband. After marrying in 1958 and starting their family in Buffalo, New York, they moved to Canada where they lived in Georgetown and finally settled in Scarborough in 1967. Eleanor continued to pursue her nursing career at St. Joseph’s Hospital and subsequently at East General Hospital. In the midst of raising her five boys, she returned to school to complete her Masters of Science in Education at Niagara University. Eleanor was a gifted and accomplished pianist, who loved opera and baroque music; as well, she always enjoyed a lively conversation with friends and family. Eleanor had a quiet strength – she cared for others throughout her life, both in her career and then as a spouse, mother, grandmother and friend. Over the past few years, much of her time and energy were devoted to caring for her husband Gerry, the love of her life. A visitation will be held at Paul O’Connor Funeral Home, 1939 Lawrence Ave. E., Scarborough, on Friday, December 30, 2016 from 2-5 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Boniface Catholic Church, 21 Markanna Dr., Scarborough, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 31, 2016.
