Georgina TOD
Georgina Tod died September 29, 2016 in Mississauga at the age of 96. She was born November 17, 1919 in Winnipeg to Aaron and Ursula (Groziskusa) Srogen.
In the 1940s, Georgina worked as a long distance telephone operator at Trans Canada Airlines. It was there she met her true love, Andrew Tod. Upon winning two tickets to the Policeman’s Ball, Georgina mustered her courage and asked Andy to accompany her. The rest is history. The couple wed in 1952 and a year later, daughter Joanne was born.
Apart from her excellent cooking and sewing skills, Georgina was an avid reader whose favourite pastime (other than dancing) was curling up on the couch with a good book. She enjoyed travelling with family and especially cherished her Hawaiian vacations. Georgina’s vivacious personality and exuberant sense of humour attracted many friends and admirers. (“Why are people always kissing me?” she often wondered).
Georgina was a caring, empathetic person who donated blood every year until well into her seventh decade. She also volunteered for 35 years at the Trillium Hospital Nearly New Shop where she procured vintage bargains for herself and other happy recipients. Her artist daughter appreciated the many towels she would utilize as paint rags. Georgina was also her daughter’s most discerning art critic and advocate.
Georgina continued to live comfortably in her own home until the end of her life, thanks to Retire-at-Home’s compassionate caregivers.
Georgina was the last surviving family member of her generation. She was a beautiful, generous woman who was well loved and will be sadly missed by her daughter, nieces, nephews and friends. Celebration of her life will take place Saturday, October 22, 1 – 3 p.m. at Turner and Porter, Peel Chapel, 2180 Hurontario Street, Mississauga. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the WWF – Canada. Cheerio!
