Georgina “Babs” Willmot WOODS

Babs Woods (Georgina Willmot, nee Young), known as ‘Granny’ to everybody, died peacefully on Thursday, March 30, 2017 at the Belmont House in Toronto shortly after celebrating her 95th birthday. Predeceased by her husband Blakeney; survived by her five children Doug (Valerie), Alan (Di), Chris (Jani), Willmot (Bruce) and Nancy (Larry), fourteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Babs was born in Ancaster near Hamilton in 1922, the third of five children, all the rest being boys. She was called ‘Baby’ which morphed into ‘Babby’ and eventually into ‘Babs’. During WWII she was in the Womens’ Army Corp and drove 18-wheeler trucks. After the war, she met Blakes on a blind date. They married in 1946 and moved to Toronto where they raised their five children. Summers were spent at Wildwood in Shanty Bay, where there was a constant inflow of family and friends. Dinners were known to expand to great numbers. Nothing ever seemed too much and requests were always accommodated with a casual “oh sure.” After Blakes’ death in 1989, she continued as the matriarch of the family. Wildwood remained an important focus in her life and she stayed there every summer until ill health forced her from there and from her home in Toronto. She spent the last four years of her life at the Belmont House where she was cared for and loved by Josie Trabucon.

She was fiercely protective and generously supportive of her family. She had a wonderful sense of humour and she loved to laugh, which Blakes could always make her do. Please join us for a celebration of her life at THE TORONTO GOLF CLUB, 1305 Dixie Road, Mississauga on Saturday, April 8th at 1:00 p.m. If desired, donations may be made to the I.O.D.E., the ROM or Belmont House.
