Gerald (Gerry) NELSON
NELSON, Gerald (Gerry) December 4, 1933- February 21, 2017 It is with sadness and much emotion that we wish to announce the passing of our father and grandfather, Gerry Nelson at the age of 83. Son of the late William Joseph Nelson and Mary Elizabeth (Bessy) Bryne and husband to the late Pauline Jean Rice. Gerry is survived by his devoted son and daughter-in-law, Grant and Cheryl Nelson and their three children, Alyssa, Brendhan and Jenelle Nelson. Gerry is also survived by his brother William (Bill) Nelson of Cambridge and sister-in-law Linda Urquhart and partner Al of Hamilton. He was predeceased by his sisters Joan, Mary Margaret, Noreen, and Teresa. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and especially enjoyed the company of Carole, Trish, Kevin, Karen and Michelle in recent months. Gerry grew up in Hamilton in a busy Irish Catholic family. Over time, he worked at various professions during his life from time at the Westinghouse factory, to that of a firefighter followed by a time as a police officer in Hamilton. He later became a ginseng farmer in the Waterford area with his father-in-law and a businessman in Simcoe where he ran the Tim Hortons donut shop with Pauline and Grant on the Queensway. As a result, he knew many a fellow and had many a story to share. He would often visit with just about anyone at the coffee shop, enjoying his lunches with whoever happened to be nearby. He will also be missed by long time friends Jeff Rice, Keith Jolley and Ray Davis and their families. Friends are invited to share their memories of Gerry with his family at the JASON SMITH FUNERAL CHAPEL, 689 Norfolk St. N., Simcoe for visitation on Thursday, February 23, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Gerry’s funeral service will be held in the chapel on Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Ron Mullin officiating. Spring interment: Oakwood Cemetery, Simcoe. Donations to honour Gerry’s memory may be made to the Tim Horton’s Children’s Foundation.
