IRISCATHERINE KELLY

KELLY, IRIS CATHERINE 1917 – 2017 Peacefully at Bridgepoint Health on July 4, 2017 in her 100th year, only three days after enthusiastically celebrating Canada’s 150th Birthday. She was the beloved wife of the late James Kelly and the dear mother of Daniel, Kevin (Lynda) and Randy (Rose). Her grandsons are Shawn and William Somerbell. She was predeceased by three brothers: Dalton, Howard and Wilbert Valiquette and two sisters, Ethel Kelly and Edna Mulligan and is survived by her sister Marion Harrison. Iris Valiquette was born in Arnprior, Ontario, the daughter of Hannah and Charlie Valiquette and was raised in the town of Smooth Rock Falls, Ontario, where her father was mill manager for the Abitibi Pulp and Paper Company. In her youth, she was a champion tennis player, winning the title of Northern Ontario Tennis Champion in 1939. She also excelled at the piano. At the age of 19, she moved to Toronto with her sister Marion and took training at Shaw’s Business College, becoming a Secretary in a legal firm as well as the Toronto office of the Halifax Insurance Company. In 1947 she married James Kelly and together they raised a family of three boys. When time permitted, she returned to the work force, for many years working in the offices of Sears Canada as well as Found Brothers Aviation. After Jim’s passing in 1988, she continued to live in the family home in Rexdale until the age of 97, where she read the Toronto Star daily and never missed The National every evening on the CBC. The family wishes to express great gratitude to the many individuals, including those at CACC and Canes, especially Yvonne Hudson Blake, who assisted her at that time. Unfortunately, three years ago she suffered a fall which resulted in a broken hip. As a result, her final years were spent at Bridgepoint where she experienced the care and affection of the staff on 7th floor North Wing. A special visitor who became a great friend to her during that time and whom she looked upon as the daughter she never had, was Britt McBain. A more recent addition was Maia Renihan, a kind and caring individual who she spoke fondly of. A Funeral Mass will take place at Saint Benedict’s Roman Catholic Church in Rexdale (2194 Kipling Avenue) at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 22nd. A ‘Celebration of Life’ will take place following the service.
