JoanARCHIBALD

ARCHIBALD, Joan Margaret Joan (Martin) Archibald died peacefully, with her second daughter at her side, on April 14, 2017 at the Stedman Hospice in Brantford. She was in her 89th year. She was loved deeply by her husband Jim, who passed away 19 years ago, and her children, Linda Archibald of Killaloe, Judi Thompson of Brantford, and David Archibald (Carol) of Thunder Bay. Adored grandmother of Abi, Araina, Tamara, Cole, BJ, Katie, Kaile, James, Sean and Cayd; and great-grandmother to Calvin, Akira, Nickolas, Victoria, Avery, Cameron, Keira, Cy, Parker, Loic, and Nova. Joan was close to her sister Diane Patchett of Burlington and her sister-in-law Joan Archibald of Ottawa. Joan was born and raised in Montreal. She studied art and fashion design and then moved with her family to Port Credit. She married her Montreal sweetheart, Jim, and settled on the Hamilton Mountain to start a family. In 1964, the family moved to Ancaster – to a home that she filled with more than 50 years of warm and wonderful memories of family and friends. Her special Christmas traditions created lasting memories in the hearts of her children and grandchildren. Joan will be remembered most warmly for her engaging smile, generous spirit, great sense of humour, and love of family. She had many dear friends, including her travelling companions, Euchre club, and fellow line-dancers. Their gatherings invariably involved a great deal of laughter. In retirement, Joan became a bit of an adventurer. She travelled widely in Canada and abroad. She zip-lined in the Mexican rainforest, rode a hot air balloon in Arizona, snorkelled in Aruba, went tubing in Kauii, and swam with stingrays. She was an avid swimmer who taught her grandchildren how to dive. In her basement workshop, she made beautiful pieces of stained glass that adorned her home and those of her family. Joan remained physically active into the last year of her life and was mentally acute until the end. She approached her illness in the same way she dealt with all of life’s difficulties, with dignity, grace, strength, and a positive attitude. No service will be held at her request; please feel free to honour her in your own way. Donations in her memory may be made to the Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada.
