CAREY, Joan (Hanlon) Died on Sunday, August 27, 2017, at the Birchmere Retirement Residence, Orillia following a long and happy life. She had just celebrated her 94th birthday and spent much of the first month of her 95th year surrounded by her loving family and friends. Beloved wife of the late Paul (1994) for forty-four years and loving mother of Jo-Anne, Paul (Brenda), Patricia (David), Jim (Prue), Barb (Peter), Peter (Dawn) and Colleen (George). She will be missed by her 14 grandchildren and 5 great-granddaughters, to whom she was Nana. Joan was the daughter of the late John and Lillian (O’Donnell) Hanlon and grew up on their farm in Lloydtown, Ontario. Dear sister of Jim (late Hilda) and Anne (Hans). Predeceased by son-in-law Bill Damen, sisters Mary Busby (late George), Helen Hanlon and Mildred Freyer and by brother Tom (late Joyce). Remembered by Raymond Freyer and Lorraine Carey. Joan and Paul spent many happy years in Toronto on Wilgar Road and at the family cottage in Beaverton. She loved hosting her annual summer cocktail party at the cottage for her friends and neighbours. Joan loved flowers, knitting and baking. She won hundreds of ribbons over the years at the Beaverton and Sunderland Fall Fairs for her knitting, pies and butter tarts. She was a devout Catholic and a longtime member of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in Toronto and St. Joseph’s in Beaverton. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Mary Laarakkers for being Joan’s companion for five years. Sincere appreciation and thanks to the staff and residents of the Birchmere Retirement Residence for the incredible love, care and attention given to Joan for nearly three years. Visitation will be held at the Mangan Funeral Home, 332 Osborne Street, Beaverton, Ontario, 705-426-5777 on Friday, September 1, 2017 from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 573 Simcoe Street, Beaverton, Ontario on Saturday, September 2, 2017 at 1 p.m. There will be visitation at the church from 12 noon to 1 p.m. Cremation.
