JOHNA. (JACK) GILLETT

JOHN A. (JACK) GILLETT April 18, 1924 – September 18, 2017 Our beloved Jack passed away peacefully with his family by his side. Dear husband of Ruth for 68 years. Loving father of Martha, her husband Keith, Tom, his wife Bernie, and Jane (predeceased). He is survived by his six Gillett and four Pettit grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Jack began his career at St. Louis University, but it was interrupted by the Korean War. He worked for a few years with Sheraton Hotels, then returned to his first passion – teaching history. He worked at the North York Board of Education 1959-1986, first as a history teacher, then as Co-ordinator for Social Studies K-13. During that time he also founded AISP, The Alternate and Independent School Program for North York which he headed for five years. He was a mentor to students, teachers and his family over the course of his lifetime. He was cherished for his great sense of humour, an attentive listener even to the smallest concern of the youngest child. His influence will be felt long into the future. Visitation will be held on Friday, September 22, 2017 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the R.S. Kane Funeral Home (6150 Yonge St., at Goulding, south of Steeles). A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Gabriel’s Parish (670 Shepperd Ave. E.). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Doctors Without Borders, Canadian Red Cross, or Canada’s National Historical Society. Condolences www.rskane.ca
