Born in Montreal, Quebec, August 4, 1920; died in Mississauga, Ontario, December 16, 2016. John spent his working life with DuPont of Canada Ltd. He was a community volunteer, church lay-reader, gardener, winter sports enthusiast, world traveller, connoisseur of good food, wine and single malts, bridge player, caring brother of Marion (d. 2007) and Bradley (d. 2012), loving uncle and friend to many; but most of all a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. John served in WWII as a fighter pilot, in operations with RCAF CAC Detachments in Newfoundland and Canadian East coast ports and with RAF rocket-firing Typhoon Squadrons 181 and 247 in France and Germany. For his war-time service, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and, from France, Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur. After a courtship at university interrupted by WWII, John married Dora Helen May Proven in 1945. They were a loving couple and wonderful team for more than 68 years, until Dora’s death in 2014. Father to Roy (Linda), Joy (David Morrow, d. 2013), Don (Carol) and Alan (Norma), for all of whom he was an involved Dad and excellent role model. He was actively involved in the lives of his grandchildren Nancy (Philippe Frank) and Lisa (Dan Wheeler), Alison (John Halloran) and Andrew (Sheila Aitken-Morrow), Kelsey and Avery, Alana and Erica, never forgetting a birthday and often including them in Dora’s and his travels. He was a delighted great-grandfather to Rosalie Frank, Dana, Josephine and John Wheeler, Marlowe and Charlotte Halloran, Gavin and Cameron Aitken-Morrow. John will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his family, who invite friends to join them with memories of his long and fulfilling life at a Memorial Celebration Service at 3:00 p.m., with a reception to follow, on Saturday, January 21, 2017, at St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Erindale, 3041 Mississauga Road (corner of Dundas Street W.), Mississauga, ON, Telephone 905-828-2095). In lieu of flowers and in recognition of John’s devotion as caregiver to Dora, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society Peel, 60 Briarwood Avenue, Mississauga, ON L5G 3N6.
