ROSS, John Matheson —

1924 – 2017

Passed away on February 3, 2017 in Toronto at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre at the age of 92, He is survived by Joan, his wife of 68 years and his children Sandra (Claude), Kevin (Andree), Janet and Carolyn (Linas). He was also the proud and much loved grandfather to John, Olivia, Jack, Oliver, Benjamin and Lucas. John was a first generation Canadian, born in Montreal. He was a World War II Veteran who enlisted in the army at the tender age of nineteen and was a member of the Grenadier Guards. He spent three years as a member of a tank crew and fought bravely. John was a humble soldier who liked to tell us stories of the friends he made during his service and the good times they had. He had a special fondness for the people of Holland and returned there to take part in the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of their liberation. Upon his return to Montreal John joined Nortel (then called Northern Electric) and was a long serving employee, spending his entire managerial career there. He was transferred to Toronto in 1977 where he worked until his retirement. During his retirement years John was an active member of the Nortel Pioneers. He was an avid traveller and with Joan visited Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii and many other interesting destinations including Scotland, his ancestral home. Those who wish to pay their respects to John may do so at the Andrews Community Funeral Centre, 8190 Dixie Road, Brampton, on Wednesday, February 8, 2017. Visiting will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. in the chapel at the funeral home. In John’s memory, donations may be made to the Salvation Army.
