POWELL, JOYCE L. Passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 24, 2017, in Toronto at the age of 95. Predeceased by her parents Daniel and Ivy Powell, her brothers Roy Powell and Daniel Powell, her sisters Merle Arnold and Ena Kenly. She is survived by her niece Yolanda Ann Powell and her nephew Daniel (Dan) James III, great-nieces Brigette Traynor Powell and Jennifer Danielle Powell. Also survived by her cousins Oliver Jones, Linvil Jones and Marilyn Dozzo. A graduate from Happy Grove High School, Portland, Jamaica. She received a certificate of music and a certificate in hotel management. During WWII, Joyce worked as a secretary at United Fruit Company in Kingston, Jamaica. Each week Joyce and her co-workers contributed to the cost of one Red Cross Package. Soon thank you letters from grateful military men came to the office. Joyce decided to correspond with an English soldier sending him useful items. Later she went to work in New York City, even having a chance encounter bumping into Rock Hudson in which he apologized to her. A longtime member of St. Monica’s Church, Catholic Womens League. She will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by everyone. Friends may visit at the TRULL “NORTH TORONTO” FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION CENTRE, 2704 Yonge St. (5 blocks south of Lawrence Ave.), on Friday, September 1st from 4 until 8 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday at ST. MONICA’S CATHOLIC CHURCH (44 Broadway Ave., Toronto) at 11:30 am. Interment to follow at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery.
