Ruby MARTELL
MARTELL, Ruby On August 23, 2016, the world lost a great lady, our mum, Ruby Martell. Mum left this world the way she lived: peacefully, quietly and gently. Mum was a war bride who courageously left her family and all she knew in England in 1946 to cross the ocean to be with her Canadian soldier husband, our dad, Howard. Together they built a strong and loving family life for us. The last ten years were difficult for mum: life in a wheelchair, the death of our dad and finally the fog of dementia. And yet through it all, she never complained and always, without fail, looked on the bright side. Her children, Susan (and Alan McKenzie), Gillian (and Brian Johnson) and Brett (and Sarah) will carry memories of her in our hearts forever. She was Gramma to her grandchildren: Jenny Miller, Steven (and Lisa Lessard), Valerie (and Jared Bennett), Scott (and Michelle Johnson) and Matt (and Shelagh Lessard). Mum was “Gramma Duke” and “Super Gramma” to eleven great-grandchildren. Mum, we were truly blessed to have had you and dad in our lives for so long and are so thankful that you and dad were there to enjoy our children and grandchildren. We will always remember your hand-knitted sweaters, raisin bread, Swedish rings and cheese buns. A great source of pride was your garden and you spent many happy hours working in it. You have passed your love of plants on to us. We are truly grateful for the love and care given to our mum by the staff at Ridgeview LTC (Nash Jackson) and Reverend Lola. Goodbye, mum. You will be missed more than you can ever know. A family celebration of mum’s life is planned for a later date.
