NOVICK, Marvyn – Loving husband to Ryva Novick (1938-2003), beloved father of Gillian (partner Nat Paul), Joff Romoff (wife Tara), Janie Romoff and Jordan Romoff (wife Susan). Adoring and devoted grandfather to Sacha, Ezra, Jake, Zoe, Claire and Ari. On June 21, 2016, Marvyn passed away suddenly at his home in Toronto at age 75. Marvyn was born and grew up in Montreal, where he found profound companionship and eternal love with Ryva when they worked together as YMHA youth workers. In 1970 he and Ryva married and built a life in Toronto founded in love and respect for each other, family and community. Ever a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather, he was gentle, compassionate and unconditional in his support for the passions, interests and pursuits of his children and grandchildren. Marvyn graduated from Sir George Williams University in Montreal and did graduate work at the University of Michigan and Northwestern. He was deeply committed to the core values of equity, social justice and humanity and had a distinguished career as Dean and professor at the Ryerson University School of Social Work. Amongst his peers, he was recognized as an incisive and meticulous thinker and community activist. He researched, wrote and spoke on child poverty in Canada, work, family life and the life chances of children, community systems and resilience and the social responsibilities of local governments in Ontario. Upon retiring he remained a ctively engaged as a contributor to social policy work and was conducting research on income security and pension reform up to the time of his passing. His legacy is expansive and he will be profoundly missed. Private funeral service and shiva. A public commemoration of his life will be announced at a later date.
