Mary SARKESIAN

(nee MELKONIAN)

Passed peacefully on May 19, 2017 in her 93rd year, at the Woodhaven Long Term Care facility in Markham with devoted family and caring staff by her side. Loving wife to Jack Sarkesian (deceased) and beloved mother to daughter Teresa Sarkesian (Brian Welsh) who will miss her dearly. She leaves behind nieces and nephews including Ralph (Audrey), Roxie, Marianne (Gary), Tom and Lorie (Tim). Born in Galt (Cambridge), Ontario on April 29, 1925, Mary had wonderful memories of her hometown friends – Marg P., Margaret and Irene P., Alma W. to name only a few. Mary worked at Sinclair’s, Woolworths and as a bookkeeper at Dixon Dairy. After marrying Jack in the late 1950s, she moved to Toronto. Her passions included old movies; gardening; and doting over the family cat. She particularly enjoyed her outings with Sonia M. (deceased 2015) as they hit the malls and the movies regularly. Her bright smile, gentle disposition, generosity, sense of humour and gift for gab were loved by her family and friends and the staff at the Woodhaven. The Woodhaven, her home for over 5 years, gave Mary the opportunity for a new lease on life as she cultivated dear friendships and fully participated in the recreational activities every day. Mom was a very popular resident and held court daily on the main floor with Dororthy, Shirley and Joan. The staff provided excellent care, compassion and friendship especially during the last few weeks when she received comfort care. The family extends its deep gratitude to all staff with special mention to those working in Unionville Village. Visitation will be held at the Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre, 375 Mount Pleasant Rd., Toronto, on Wednesday, May 24th from 4-8 p.m. and from 10-11 a.m. on Thursday, May 25th. A funeral service will be held May 25th at 11 a.m. at the Mount Pleasant Chapel, 375 Mount Pleasant Rd. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, the Alzheimer Society or the Toronto Humane Society would be appreciated by the family.
