HUNTER, Moira —

Moira Hunter (also known as Moi, Mom, Gran and the infamous Moira of Branson), 76, of Thornhill, Ontario, passed away May 24, 2017 at North York General Hospital. Moira was born in Aberdeen, Scotland and was the only child of David and Agnes McAlpine. From a small child she took on the role of older sister to her cousin Elinor (Norval), establishing a 70-year bond that would never break. At the age of 22 she married a quiet, shy William Hunter and by 26 with her husband and 2 young girls in tow was bound for Canada and a new adventure. Welcomed into the arms of a loving Aunt and Uncle, (Sadie and Sam Dick) and their extended family (Glenn, Henry and Diane) on arrival in Canada, it didn’t take long for Moira to settle into life on Lorraine Drive. At this time she started a 37-year career at North York Branson Hospital where her intelligence, quick wit, soft Scottish accent and most of all – kindness, was legendary. She loved travelling and especially if it could be with, or to, family and friends. Moira’s travel adventures took her to Fiji, Beijing, Sydney, Hawaii, and her favourite, her home, Scotland. Lifelong friends (Marion and Billy); gracious neighbours; (the Hanns, the Langs, the Glasses, the Lamberts); dear in-laws (James, Margaret, George, Marylyn, Christine, George) and wonderful work colleagues at North York Branson Hospital were all part of the rich tapestry of Moira’s full life. Moira was preceded in death by her parents, David and Agnes McAlpine. Moira is survived by her loving husband of 55 years William; daughters Dorothy MacDonald (Rune Engelsgjerd); Alison Gaskin and Christine Hunter; her two grandchildren Hailey and Noah Gaskin; niece Tammie Rix (Craig), half sisters Heather and Shona and many friends and relatives in Canada, Australia and Scotland. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the R.S. Kane Funeral Home (6150 Yonge St., at Goulding, south of Steeles). A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Freeman Centre for the Advancement of Palliative Care: North York General Foundation 4001 Leslie St., Toronto, Ontario M2K 1E1. Condolences may be left in Moira’s online guestbook at www.rskane.ca. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Dr. Daryl Roitman for taking such good care of Mom for the past 7 years and their sincere gratitude to North York General Hospital for their superior care and kindness shown to Moira in her final days.
