Predeceased by his wife of 65 years Audrey and brother David and sister Mary. Joe leaves behind his children Jonathan (Mary), Peter (Lauryn), Andrew (Mei-Chuan Lee) and Margaret, as well as grandchildren Gian-Luca, Patrizio, Sean (Claudiane), Kaleigh, Julia (Nigel), Simon and Timothy. Joe was born in Port Glasgow, Scotland and immigrated to Hamilton at two years of age. He was ordained by The Presbyterian Church in Canada in 1949 and served congregations in Quebec, Scotland and Ontario. He and Audrey had been members of Briarwood Presbyterian Church for many years. Joe was lecturer at Knox College, Toronto, in the late fifties, following which he was appointed Robert Professor of Philosophy of Religion and Christian Ethics at The Presbyterian College, Montreal and became McConnell Professor of Philosophy of Religion at McGill in 1964. Joe served two terms as the Dean of the Faculty of Religious Studies of McGill. He also served as President of the Canadian Theological Society and as editor of several academic journals and was a contributing editor of the Presbyterian Record. He was a member or chairman of several dialogue groups with other churches. Joe was author of numerous academic articles and wrote or edited over twenty books, including The Clown and the Crocodile (1970) and Prometheus Rebound: The Irony of Atheism (1988). He was a founding editor of The Peter Martyr Library, a series of English translations of the chief works of the early protestant reformer, Peter Martyr Vermigli. Joe was Moderator of The Presbyterian Church in Canada in 1985-1986. The library at Presbyterian College in Montreal bears his name. Proud of his Scottish heritage, he was a member of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society for forty years and was named Scotsman of the year by the Quebec Thistle Council in 2007. Husband, father, grandfather and uncle, Joe leaves behind a legacy of faith and devotion to his church. Joe was warm, open and cheerful and he will be missed by his children and grandchildren, by his extended family out of Hamilton, by colleagues and former students, by those with whom he shared the life of the church and by the many others who were glad to call him their friend. He has gone to join the love of his life, Audrey, who stood beside him for all those years. There will be a memorial service at Briarwood Presbyterian Church, 70 Beaconsfield Blvd. (2 blocks east of St. Charles) H9W 3Z3, on Saturday, February 25, 2017, at 11:00 a.m., with visitation at the church one hour before the service. Donations in Joe’s honour may be made to Briarwood Church or to The Presbyterian College, Montreal, 3495 University St. H3A 2A8. The ashes of Joe and Audrey are to be interred in Hamilton in the spring; the date of the accompanying memorial service will be announced at a later time. “Because of life’s contradictions; because man experiences both darkness and light; because the contest is a dance and the dance is a glory, therefore celebration is always in order. The truly human life is an act of celebration.” The Clown and the Crocodile
