VERAALICE (SIVELL) MASSIE

VERA ALICE MASSIE (nee SIVELL) It is with sadness that the family of Vera Alice Massie (nee Sivell) share the news of her peaceful passing in Barrie at the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre on Saturday, July 2, 2016 while surrounded by her entire family following a massive heart attack on Canada Day. Vera was born September 4, 1921 in Toronto, the only daughter of Isabel and Frank Sivell. She was predeceased by her two brothers Frank and Ken. She met the love of her life James Cardno Massie (“J.C”) on the shores of Lake Simcoe in their teenage years. She waited patiently and dutifully until Jim returned from the RCAF in World War II before finally tying the knot in 1946. Together they built an incredible legacy of family and community. She will be lovingly remembered by her children Marilynn Booth (Terry Reid) of Toronto and Jamie Massie (Wendy Massie) of Barrie, her seven grandchildren Kristen (Ben Robinson), Kylie (Michael Bosman), Rob (Kate Booth), Andrew, Jamie, Jeffrey and Alex. Her blessings just kept growing as she welcomed seven great-grandchildren Carter, Lucy, Crosby, Roan, Charlie, Silken and Beckett. Some of her greatest joys in her life included being the proud, loving, generous and involved great-grandmother of 7. She had a knack for buying Christmas presents that suited each and every one of their unique personalities! Vera and Jim had 60 years together. They moved a lot in the early years but finally settled in their community of Barrie in 1981, building Georgian Pontiac Buick GMC with great pride. Vera served as the honorary “chairman of the board” and was a devoted wife to Jim. She attended every Barrie Colts hockey game by his side. She also did community service aligned to her interests. She knitted more than 1000 Izzy dolls that were sent to the devastated communities in Haiti to comfort the children there. The family wishes to sincerely thank the loving caregivers at the Waterford Retirement Residence and especially Kathy Chappell and her colleagues for providing such loving and fun care to Vera over the past several years. As well, the palliative team at RVH ensured that Vera and her entire family had a peaceful goodbye. In accordance with Vera’s wishes, cremation has taken place and her cremated remains will be placed beside her husband in a private family ceremony. Pop has waited 10 years to be reunited with the love of his life. A Celebration of Life will be held at the MacLaren Art Centre, 37 Mulcaster Street, Barrie from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 7, 2016 during which time a family tribute will take place at 2:30 p.m. If you wish to honour Vera’s memory, the family would appreciate contributions be made to the JC Massie bursary fund at Georgian College in Barrie.
