WILLIAMALEXANDER “BILL” DERBY

WILLIAM “BILL” ALEXANDER DERBY It is with great sadness that our beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, William Alexander Derby, died on Monday, March 6, 2017 at St. Michael’s Hospital, Toronto. Bill leaves behind his wife, Jane; daughters, Susan (Dan Sloan), Andrea (Steve Carlisle) and Sarah (Colin McIntosh); as well as grandchildren: Andrew, Sam, Katie and Ben; and his sister, Mary Preston. Bill was predeceased by his sister, Katherine Garrison. The son of Helen and Andrew Derby, Bill was born in 1937 in Noranda, Quebec. In his younger years, Bill spent summers out in the bush along James Bay and Northern Saskatchewan working with geologists. He would go on to have a long and fulfilling career as a Teacher; working at Kapuskasing High School, Rosseau Lake College, Durham College and Loyalist College, passing along his passion for Canadian history to thousands of students along the way. Bill was instrumental in the start up of the Sports Administration Program at Durham College and for many students, he was considered one of the best teachers they ever had. Bill combined his love of sports and history when he wrote a column for the Globe and Mail, “This Week in Sports History”. He was an avid outdoorsman, comfortable in a canoe or cross-country skis. Bill spent many summers with his family at their cottage on the northeastern shore of Georgian Bay. He would spend hours canoeing, swimming and picking blueberries or cranberries and then over a glass of wine, regale everyone with stories. Once retired, he and Jane travelled the globe, enjoying many great adventures. Bill shared his passion for sports, travel, history and Canadian cottage life with his daughters and grandchildren. As per his wishes, there will be no service. At a later date however, there will be a celebration of life for family and friends. In memory of Bill, a donation to a charity important to you would be appreciated. For online condolences, please visit www.lowandlow.ca
