ELEANOR MULVENEY

ELEANOR MULVENEY

Eleanor Mulveney of Toronto, Ontario, born August 21, 1932, passed away peacefully on November 3, 2018 surrounded by her loving family after a long struggle with her health.

She was daughter of the late Opria Hungerson (Ungureanu) and Marie Hammann, and beloved wife of the late Ralph Mulveney. Eleanor proudly lived most of her life in The Junction neighbourhood of Toronto. She was greatly loved by her nephews Stephen, David (Tania), niece Janet (Carl), grandnephew Matthew and grandniece Jessica, to whom she was always known as “Gully”. She will be dearly missed by her sister Irma (John), brother Bill, brother-in-law Tony and steadfast and true friend Lorne. She was predeceased by her dear sisters Marion and Betty.

Eleanor lived a life of helping and service to others. She was also a true spark plug, so a long career as the head switchboard operator for Weston Bakeries suited her well. She was known to brighten many people’s days, from the company president to the line workers. After her dear father died in 1970, she devoted herself ceaselessly and without hesitation to the care of her dear disabled brother Bill and joined him to live at Wesburn Manor for the final years of her life. Eleanor gave tremendous neverending support to her sister Betty and played a major role in the raising of her son Stephen. Not long after her husband died in 1974, she found her salvation in the church. She converted to Catholicism, and soon became an Associate of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Toronto, a part of her life that she always treasured. Eleanor was as active with the church as her job, and her health would allow, even accompanying the Sisters on missionary trips to James Bay in the 1970s and 1980s to help the local communities. Her deep, unwavering faith helped and comforted her through many difficult times.

Eleanor was a down-to-earth person, always concerned for the welfare of close as well as extended family, friends, co-workers, neighbours, even complete strangers. She was generous to a fault with her nieces and nephews, and a truly great Great-Aunt. Eleanor never took the easy path in life; it held no interest for her. She always chose the path with obstacles, and her life was filled with meaning. She will forever live in the hearts of the countless fortunate people to whom she devoted her boundless energy, deep caring and love, and seemingly limitless time.

The family is deeply grateful for the compassionate support and loving care she received from Marsha, Mila, and all the healthcare staff at Wesburn Manor.

A private family burial has already taken place. Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Eleanor’s life on Friday, December 7th. Service to be held at 2 p.m., to be followed by refreshments at Wesburn Manor, 400 The West Mall in Etobicoke.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation to The Sisters of St. Joseph of Toronto, www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/csj-to/ would be appreciated by the family. Online condolences may be made at www.turnerporter.ca
