ESTHER (LEE) YOUNG

ESTHER (LEE) YOUNG

YOUNG, ESTHER (LEE) January 17, 1913 – June 16, 2018 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Esther (predeceased by husband Jan) Saturday, June 16, 2018; survived by sisters, Mable and Ruth and brother, Len. Dear mother of Gilbert (Marina) (both deceased), Gerry McLean (Edward), Richard (Frances), Jan Jr. (Lily), Steven (Elsie), Rosemary Pon (Calvin), Robert Stanley (Janice), Michael (deceased), Susan Van Eijk (Theo).

Loved Grandmother to Jeffrey, Cindy, Peter, Michelle, Bruce, Mark, Lori, Dana, Bradley, Craig, Sheri, Jennifer, Christopher, Nicolien and Nathalie and Great-Grandmother to Zachary, Cassandra, Jaclynne, Simon, Owen, Quenton, Amanda, Stephanie, Keira, Erica, Sebastian, Soleil, Nathan, Samantha, Liam and Kalle. She was proud of all her children and a great inspiration to everyone in that she contended they could reach for the stars and become whatever they desired with resolve and hard work. Esther, born in Vancouver, came to Toronto in the early thirties with her husband Jan to start their journey through life.

A resident of North Toronto she was the longest-surviving retailer on Mt. Pleasant Road; she and the family knew a great many of their customers and neighbours over that period of time who became life-long friends and extended family. Esther was a woman who accomplished much what with managing their business and a family consisting of a baseball team (all nine) who excelled academically and athletically. She was a first-class business woman, mother, wife, grandmother, great-grandmother, cook, seamstress, nurturer extraordinaire. She remembered special events for her wide circle of friends and always had the knack of singling them out on special occasions.

She could even claim that she taught her husband to drive and play tennis (which at that time) was not considered genteel for a married woman but that didn’t deter her. Many who crossed her path were fortunate to have shared her friendship, her humour, sharp wit, fun-loving nature, tenacity and zest for life. She was an icon and far ahead of her time and was pleased to be recognized as a “modern” woman. The family wish to express their thanks for all the caregivers that have given her excellent care over the past few years and of late at Yee Hong, Mississauga for exceptional attention. We, are so grateful. Mom will be sadly missed by her family. Love you forever and always, the Whole, extended Young Family.

Please feel free to donate to the Yee Hong Geriatric Centre, Mississauga, 5510 Mavis Road, Mississauga, L5V 2X5 or charity of choice.

Visitation and Services will be held at Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre, 375 Mount Pleasant Road, Toronto ON, Friday, June 22, 5:00 – 9:00 p.m., Saturday, June 23, 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. followed by Celebration of Life at the Visitation Centre.
