Ines (Joll) AHERMAE

Ines (Joll) AHERMAE

With heavy hearts the family of Ines Ahermae (nee Joll) announces her passing. Predeceased by her loving husband Erich, her parents Anton and Magda, brother Peter and daughter Sylvia (Andres), Ines leaves behind her adoring children Karen (Thomas) and Martin (Karin), sister Rita (Veljo) and her family, and sister-in-law Jackie Joll and her family. She was cherished as Oma to 5 grandchildren: Eero (Sarah), Jaanu (Liis), Maiki (Ezra), Anneli (Steve) and Erik. Ines was further blessed with 8 great-grandchildren: Oliver, Robert, Aivi, Skarlet, Juhan, Liivi, Sander and Suvi. She also leaves behind her sister-in-law Erika and many cousins, nieces and nephews in Estonia.

Ines was born in Tallinn, Estonia and moved to Canada at age 7 with her family. They settled on a farm outside of St. Catharines where Ines quickly learned the English language and took to piano with great passion. She attended Maywood School, St. Catharines Collegiate, and later Brock University. She was a member of the “Filiae Patriae” Estonian sorority. Ines met her husband Erich and three children later they built their dream home at the base of the Niagara escarpment where she happily lived until she was 88 years of age surrounded by fantastic neighbours. Ines’ lifelong dream of becoming a teacher was realized in 1969.

She taught for 15 years with the Lincoln County Board of Education. Ines and Erich enjoyed travel to the Caribbean and frequently returned to Estonia to visit relatives. She was a devout Lutheran and long-time member of the St. Catharines Estonian Congregation and the Resurrection Lutheran Church. In her later years she took Religious studies at the Lutheran Seminary at Brock University. Ines’ journey ended at Shalom Village in Hamilton where she was nearer to her family.

A special thanks to Recreational Therapist Oliver Irving for his kindness while there. We are grateful for her love in everything she did for and with us and the life lessons including her blend of farm girl work ethic and love of fashion- arriving for a visit you would often find her gardening in her high heels. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in Memory of Ines Ahermae to Seedriou Children’s Summer camp through the Estonian Foundation of Canada.
