Andrew Fiddes HUGH
FIDDES, Hugh Andrew September 18, 1936-February 14, 2017 Hugh Andrew Fiddes passed away peacefully at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Hamilton, Ontario. Survived by his wife El, his high school sweetheart and beloved wife of 58 years. Sons Craig and Steve, daughter-in-law Penny, daughter Susan. Grandchildren, Luke, Amy, Zoe, Hugh and Myles. Adored by the entire Arnold family of sisters and brothers-in-law. Fondly remembered by brother Tom and sister-in-law June Fiddes. Uncle and Great-uncle to many nieces and nephews that will miss their Uncle Hugh dearly. Hugh was a graduate of McMaster University, proudly achieving several degrees in various areas of study. A man passionate for learning turned his attention to teaching others with a 33 year career with the Hamilton Board of Education. As head of the Physical Education Department, Hugh was known and admired as a strong and dedicated teacher, coach and mentor. To this day his children meet people that will say ‘did your dad teach ….. ‘ and a story always follows that makes them proud! Hugh’s love of history and El’s love of travel led to many worldwide trips, around the world they went together. The stories spectacular, the time together precious. It would be amiss not to mention the fun filled poker nights that spanned over 50 years with his close friends. Hugh also had a passion for wood working, painting, a continued interest in the world through internet exploration and was an avid radio fan of the Tiger Cats and Blue Jays. But the greatest joy to Hugh, was the 30 years spent with family and friends at his beloved Sand Lake. The adventures around the lake and the islands were always relished, but the moments around the bon fires, the talking, the listening, the stories, the building of those great big fires, well, they were priceless. Particularly in the later years, where hours were spent around that fire with his best friend, his son Craig. The conversations were endless. Hugh’s life will be remembered at a private celebration of life, later this summer at his favourite spot, Sand Lake. Condolences can be sent via email to sfiddes@cogeco.ca.
