BETTYYVONNE (SMITHERS) GARBUTT

BETTY YVONNE GARBUTT (nee SMITHERS) 1923 – 2016 Betty died on her own terms, peacefully, in her 94th year on Thursday, August 25, 2016. Loving mother to James (Loretta) and Vicky (Bernard Becker). Doting grandmother to Natalie and Cameron Garbutt, Luc and Jeffrey Becker; caring aunt to Betty Ann and Marilyn Toth and the many “Calgary Garbutts”; dear friend to Marion Copping and Sheila Burns. Predeceased by her beloved husband and companion Fred, sister Muriel and brother Jim. Betty’s adventures took her from Dunnville, Ontario to the RCAF in WWII to the wilds of Yukon and British Columbia before settling in Toronto. In later years, Betty experienced adventures through her love of reading and painting. She was always interesting and always interested in everything and everyone. With an insatiable appetite for information, she could have a conversation about anything. Betty will be remembered by those who knew her as feisty, funny and with a mind of her own. Thanks to the extraordinary, caring staff of the Sunnybrook Veterans Centre. Also to Dr. Alison Culbert and the remarkable Dr. Debbie Selby for her guidance and compassion in Betty’s final weeks and days. A celebration of Betty’s life is planned with details to be determined.
