CARMEL(CHARLIE) AQUILINA

CARMEL (CHARLIE) AQUILINA Passed away peacefully at his most recent home, the Cardinal Ambrozic Houses of Providence on Monday, February 27, 2017 in his 88th year. Beloved husband of Rita who passed away in 2013, he was father to Greg (Peggy), Dave and Paul (June), Grandpa or Papa to Lindsey (Dave Smith), Dayna, Janette, Scott and great- grandfather to Charlie and Macie. Born in Sliema, Malta, Charlie met and married Rita Ella in England and moved to Canada and made Toronto their home. Charlie came from a large family and was lucky that almost all of his brothers and sisters also came to Toronto to live and prosper and share life together. He was a man of incredible kindness and was always willing to help others, he was steadfast in his love and support to all of his family members and was wise enough that many sought out his opinions when they encountered problems and wanted good advice. Charlie began his career as a Marine Engineer and when he moved to Toronto he worked his way through the ranks of Stationary Engineering until he became a Chief Stationary Engineer working for almost 40 years at the Houses of Providence operated by the Sisters of St. Joseph, first at their location on Power Street and then at the current facility at St. Clair and Warden opened in 1962 and worked until his retirement in 1993. Charlie’s passions beyond his family and friends was spending as much time as possible at the family cottage on St. Nora Lake in Haliburton which he built with his family or spending time on his cabin cruiser the “Eagles Nest”. There are many memories today for family and friends who learned to water ski while Charlie was at the helm of the cottage ski boat or countless barbecues spent with family and friends after spending long active days at the cottage. Family and friends are invited to gather at the Paul O’Connor Funeral Home, 1939 Lawrence Avenue East, on Saturday, March 4th from 12:30 – 2:30 p.m. for visitation, funeral service at 2:30 p.m. and a reception at 3:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Providence Healthcare. The family would like to take this opportunity to thank the Sisters of St. Joseph, particularly Sister Mary Edmund and Sister Roberta for their thoughts and prayers and for sharing so many wonderful years together with Charlie. The family also wants to thank all the staff who so compassionately and professionally took such great care of Charlie and want all of them to know they will not be forgotten and will be admired through our eyes.
