ELIZABETH(MARY ELIZBETH SHERK) KOSTUIK

ELIZABETH KOSTUIK (nee MARY ELIZBETH SHERK) Unexpectedly at North York General Hospital (Toronto) on August 27, 2016. Elizabeth (Liz), beloved wife of John for 53 years, treasured mother of Selby, John (Patricia) and Andrew (deceased). Survived by sister Marg Makins (Bill) and brother Jim Sherk (Gail) and cousin Edith Brown. Predeceased by siblings Doug (Phyllis), Tyke (Joan), Bill (Joan) and Esther. Fondly remembered by her in-laws, nieces and nephews and friends. Though she suffered from a severe autoimmune deficiency disease, she embraced life to its fullest. The world was Liz’s home, travelling the globe with her husband John, while maintaining a strong connection to her roots in Ayr, Ontario. Born in Paris, Ontario in 1940, Liz was one of eight siblings born to Mel and Bessie (Brown) Sherk. Graduating from Victoria Hospital’s School of Nursing (London, Ontario) in 1961, she worked at Sick Children’s Hospital, where over the operating table she met her future husband John, then an orthopedic resident. They married in 1963 and happily raised their children in Toronto, living there until 1991. In between trekking the kids to their various activities, she found time to enjoy tennis, rowing (world masters) and her role as Docent at the Royal Ontario Museum. Liz and John then moved to Baltimore, Maryland, where John furthered his medical career at Johns Hopkins Hospital. In 2006, they moved to Phoenix, Arizona splitting their time between the desert and her beloved Lake of Bays in Ontario. Gardening was her passion with her vibrant and colourful exhibit at her summer home. This garden exemplified her creativity, her eclectic taste and her passion for the written and spoken word, never a limerick forgotten, never a crossword undefeated, never a political view unchallenged. Her autoimmune disease and the loss of her beloved son Andj (Andrew) diminished her latter years significantly, though she enjoyed the Chelsea Garden Show in London this past spring. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Donations to the Andrew Kostuik Foundation at Best Friends Animal Society are welcome, care of Jacquie Bushway Speer, Dogtown, PO Box 168, Kanab, Utah, 84741, USA.
