ERICJOHN MANNISTO

ERIC JOHN MANNISTO (Papa) July 24, 1927 – November 3, 2016 Dad passed away at the Suomi- Koti Retirement Residence in Toronto on November 3, 2016. Predeceased by his loving wife Aino and youngest daughter Sandy Armstrong (Donald), he will be fondly remembered by his children Anne, Rob (Bev) and Connie Knapp (Mike) and grandchildren Brent, Erica, Jay, Tegan, Jenny, Dylan, Scarlett and Brooks and great-grandchildren James and Charlie. Born in Finland, dad immigrated to Canada as a young child. The fact that he lived into his 90th year is beyond comprehension for most of this family but probably a testament to his childhood which was not without its hardships. Living in mining towns in Quebec and Northern Ontario, he helped to provide for his siblings Ann and Henry and mother Tyne (all predeceased) after his father died in a mining accident when he was a young teenager, creating a strong fortitude. Moving to Toronto, he was employed by Maclean Hunter Magazine and learned the printing trade. He worked there for over 35 years becoming a member of the Quarter Century Club for which he was very proud. Also an active member of the Finnish Society of Toronto and Canada for many years, dad took pride in the direction and activities he participated in with the amazing group of people he called friends and worked with. He actually appeared in a few stage plays held at the Don Hall back in the day (hah!). Dad imparted a love of outdoors – golfing, camping and cottaging, fishing and campfires to all of his kids which are being passed down to the next generations. We all hope he is continuing to enjoy these activities wherever he ended up. As a memorial and celebration of life, friends and family are invited to join us and share fond memories of dad on Saturday, November 26, 2016 at The Simple Alternative Funeral Centre, 275 Lesmill Road, North York, ON, from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. No flowers please. If you care to make a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Kaiku Echo it would be much appreciated.
