OHN CHRISTIAN EGSGARD John Christian Egsgard was born in Toronto on March 25, 1925. He died at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Toronto, on July 10, 2016. A gifted and internationally acclaimed mathematics educator, John spent the first 20 years of his teaching career as a Catholic Priest with the order of Basilians. John completed Bachelors and Masters degrees in Mathematics at the University of Toronto while in the seminary and was Gold Medallist in his graduating class. He was ordained into the Catholic Priesthood in 1953 and taught at St. Michael’s College School in Toronto. There he was head of the Mathematics Department for 16 years, Superior for 6 years and coached hockey. In 1968 he was awarded the Descartes Medal for his contribution to mathematics education. John taught at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire and Andover in Massachusetts in 1971/72. Around that time, he fell in love with an American mathematician, Lyn Egsgard. John left the priesthood and with the Pope’s permission, John and Lyn married in 1973. John and Lyn shared a remarkable love and raised their 3 children Jennifer (Ashvin Malkani, Alexander and Zachary); Erik (Kristina, Rowan and Walker); and Neil (Honorine) in Orillia, Ontario, with 1982 spent living and teaching abroad in Geneva. In Orillia he taught math at Twin Lakes Secondary School and Patrick Fogarty Secondary School, where he coached the ski and rugby teams. John was a prolific author of over 25 math textbooks. He was President of the US National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), the Canadian and Ontario Associations for Mathematics Education and participated in all 8 International Congress on Mathematics Education. In 1993 he won the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Mathematics Teaching and in 1997 received the lifetime achievement award from NCTM. John was inspirational in his love of outdoor adventure and travel well into his later years. At age 70 he completed hiking all 48 4000 ft. mountains in New Hampshire. Certified as a ski instructor at age 71, he taught for nearly 10 years and maintained the Ganaraska Hiking Club website until age 90. He and Lyn travelled extensively including with their children and grandchildren, trips often involving skiing, hiking and wine. John was kind, thoughtful, extremely devoted to his family and deeply in love with Lyn. He is profoundly missed. John was predeceased by his wife Lyn McLane Egsgard, his parents Christian and Lorraine Egsgard and his siblings Lillian Tasker, Chris Egsgard and Eleanor Smith. He will be missed by his sister Judy Flynn and many relatives and friends. Visitation will be on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 at Mundell Funeral Home in Orillia from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Guardian Angels Church in Orillia on Thursday, July 14th at 10 a.m. followed by a burial at St. Michael’s Cemetery. Donations in his name may be made to St. Joseph’s Health Centre, Toronto or the Appalachian Mountain Club in New Hampshire.
