HUGHES, Walter “Spike” August 14, 1927 – June 30, 2021 It is with great sadness that the family announces the death of Walter Hughes (“Spike”), on June 30, 2021, at Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington.
He peacefully passed away just six weeks shy of his 94th birthday. Walter was a devoted husband, beloved father and cherished grandfather. He will be missed immensely by his wife of almost 66 years, June (nee Armstrong); his children: Sandy Thompson (Dave), Greg (Rossell) and Steve (Cathy); his grandchildren: Wade (Lindsay) and Brett (Natalie), Jesse and Kiana, Tyler and Brendan. He was the last living child of Walter John Hughes (deceased 1972) and Hephzibah “Edith” Perry (deceased 1987). He was predeceased by his siblings Clifford, Robby, Albert, Irene (“Rene”), Frank and Elizabeth (“Betty”). He will also be missed by his sister-in-law Diane (Bill) and his brother-in-law Garnet, and his many nieces and nephews.
He was a lifelong employee of A&P Bakery Warehouse in Toronto where he started working on July 29, 1943 (just 16 years old!) and where he worked his way up to be a Supervisor. He had many close acquaintances within both the Warehouse and A&P Stores over the 48 years until his retirement on August 1, 1991. Everyone at A&P knew who “Spike” was. Dad loved playing cards (especially Poker) with family and friends. He enjoyed watching the horse races and playing the slot machines at casinos. He was still visiting the casinos up until COVID-19 came. Sorry Dad that we didn’t get you back there to play. Dad also loved vintage cars, and often spoke fondly about the cars that he owned over the years. As per Dad’s request, there will be no visitation or service.
Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers or a donation, we are certain that Dad would prefer that you invested in yourself. Buy a lottery ticket or a scratcher in his memory – ensuring that when you strike it rich, you’ll keep him in mind a little while longer. Love you Dad… we’ll miss you.
