Stratis BARLAS

March 27, 1927 – June 12, 2021

Suddenly on June 12, 2021 in his 94th year (non-Covid). He leaves behind his loving and supportive wife Helen, of 65 years, children Cia and Marinos (Nancy) and grandchildren Jessica and Justin (Deanna). Survived by siblings Joanna Kritikos, Paul (Maria) and Maria, sister-in-law Tina Tserebas (Gus, pre-deceased), brother-in-law Geoff Shiavelis (Merelyn). Pre-deceased by his parents Marinos and Athanacia, mother-in-law Bessie Shiavelis, siblings Katerina, Dimitris, Panayiota, and brother-in-law Peter Shiavelis (Georgia). Stratis will be missed by many other relatives and friends here and in Greece.

When Stratis first came to Canada, he started out as a baker, and eventually found his “dream” job at Chedoke Hospital Cafeteria, where he worked tirelessly and happily for 25 years as a cook, until his retirement. He continued to boast about accruing zero sick days throughout his employment. Religion was an important part of his life and he volunteered at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, as the minister’s helper for many years. Stratis was a jovial, generous man, who loved to tell a good story and was well-liked and loved by many.

The family would especially like to thank Bessey and Effy Shiavelis, Perry Kanturek, Yvonne Kril and Michelle Barnard for their much-appreciated help and support during times of need. As well, we thank the many PSWs and St. Joseph’s Healthcare nurses who provided Stratis with the best of care, while he was at home.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
