CHAN, Arnold Member of Parliament for Scarborough-Agincourt Arnold Chan passed away at his home on Thursday, September 14, 2017 at the age of 50 after a courageous battle against Nasopharyngeal cancer. Son of Sandra and Anthony Chan, he was the beloved husband of Jean Yip and loving father to Nathaniel, Ethan and Theodore Chan. He is remembered by his brother Kevin Chan and his wife Rosemary Marotta and their son Maximilian, as well as by Jean’s family, mother Grace Yip, John (Catherine) and Bruce Yip (Kat) and their families. He will be deeply missed by his members of staff, colleagues and his many friends. Arnold grew up in Scarborough-Agincourt and attended both Henry Kelsey and Sir Ernest MacMillan Senior Public Schools and later Dr. Norman Bethune Collegiate Institute. He studied at both the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia and has earned both a Law degree and two Masters degrees in Political Science and Urban Planning. Before running for office, Arnold worked in both the public and private sectors as a Lawyer, Political Aide and a Senior Corporate Manager. Arnold was also active in the community as the Co-Chair of his children’s school council and as a Scout Leader. First elected in 2014 and re-elected 2015, Arnold proudly served and represented the residents of Scarborough-Agincourt in the House of Commons right up until his passing. As a Member of Parliament and Deputy Government House Leader, he was deeply passionate about instilling and strengthening our Canadian values be it democracy, civility, less canned speeches in the House of Commons or the simple thank you to fellow Canadians. Civic engagement, mentoring youth, and championing Scarborough projects were important to Arnold. He worked tirelessly for his riding and the Liberal party. Two visitations at York Cemetery Chapel (160 Beecroft Rd.) will take place on Thursday, September 21st from 5-9 p.m. and on Friday, September 22nd from 5-9 p.m. A Celebration of Arnold’s life and legacy will follow on Saturday, September 23rd at 11 a.m. at Bloor St. United Church (300 Bloor St. West).
