D.A.S.(DONALD) IVISON

D.A.S. (DONALD) IVISON, BA, MBA, NDC, LLd June 3, 1932 – March 1, 2017 Donald Alexander Stuart Ivison passed away at Toronto Western Hospital of complications from pneumonia on March 1st. A gentleman of extraordinary character, Don Ivison was the eldest son of the late Rev. Stuart and Marjorie Ivison and the brother of David and the late Duncan and Ian Ivison. Devoted husband of Betty (Mann) for over 61 years, Don was the loving father of Debbie, Robert and Duncan and grandfather to Hamish, Isobel, Daniel and Caleb. A family man in every way, Don’s affection and attention will be missed by his niece Mary Ellen and nephews Jim, Tom, Douglas and John, as well as his daughters-in-law Gillian McCarthy and Diana Irving and sisters-in-law Joyce Ivison and Mary Lindsay. His friendship and good humour will be missed by many at Yorkminster Park Baptist Church, McMaster University, the Western MBA Class of 1955, the University Club of Toronto and by neighbours and staff at 33 Delisle Ave. Born in Ottawa, Don was a student at Lisgar Collegiate Institute and attended McMaster University, where he met Betty and graduated in 1953, winning the Chancellor’s Gold Medal. He completed his MBA at the University of Western Ontario in 1955, again earning the Gold Medal. Joining ICI in Montreal, he was notably responsible for the first petty cash to be held by the newly incorporated DuPont of Canada Inc. at ICI’s split into DuPont and CIL. His fiduciary responsibilities at DuPont increased significantly over the course of his career there. In 1965, he was selected for a year long course at Canada’s National Defence College at Kingston, Ontario. He was among the very few individuals from the private sector appointed to the College and the youngest member of his class. Don spent 36 years at DuPont with many great friends along the way including Jack Walsh, Peter Pick and Ted Baumeister. Retiring as Senior Vice President and CFO in 1990, Don spent his lengthy retirement enjoying time with his family in Toronto, Los Angeles and Sydney and traveling with Betty to destinations throughout the world. Don Ivison was appointed to McMaster University’s Board of Governors in 1990, serving in various capacities including Chair of the Board of Governors from 1997 until 1999. He was recognized for his exemplary service to McMaster with an honorary degree in 2000. Don also served in various capacities at Yorkminster Park Baptist Church and prior to that for many years in Montreal at Lakeside Heights Baptist Church, Trustee at the Boy Scouts of Canada, Secretary and Director of the Financial Executives Institute Montreal Chapter and on special committees of the Canadian Export Association, the Canadian Manufacturers Association and the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants. Don was a student of life to his very last days, following his curiosity and gift for learning wherever it led him. Music, travel, food and wine, computers, politics, philosophy, history, art, science, gardening, genealogy – his passion for learning knew no bounds. After suffering a stroke in late 2015, he underwent surgery at Toronto Western Hospital for the removal of a brain tumor. His recovery required great effort on his part, largely aided by the skill, compassion and care of Dr. Ivan Radovanovic and the neurosurgical and medical teams at Toronto Western Hospital. With extraordinary home care provided by “Don’s angels” from Living Assistance Services (Maybel, Jane, Riza, Tess, Louella and Yeshi), Don’s mobility and cognitive recovery was greatly helped by Beverly Jones, of Collins and Jones Physiotherapy. The Ivison family is extremely grateful to the many dedicated friends, health care and support workers who made Don’s life as comfortable and pleasant as it could be during the last year of his life. The embodiment of his personal creed “Work Hard, Play Fair, Live Clean”, Don Ivison was loved, respected, trusted and esteemed by family, friends and colleagues across Canada and throughout the world. A Memorial Service will be held at Yorkminster Park Baptist Church on Thursday, March 9, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow. If desired, memorial donations may be made to SickKids Foundation (Patient Amenities Fund), The Toronto General & Toronto Western Hospital Foundation (Brain Campaign), or Yorkminster Park Baptist Church (General Funds), 1585 Yonge Street (at Heath St. E.).
