DR.NORMAN ANTHONY FRETZ

FRETZ, DR. NORMAN ANTHONY B.A., M.D., F.R.C.P. (C) Son of Oran and Ada (Heise) Fretz, passed away suddenly on July 6, 2017 at 86 years of age. Loving husband of Mary for 35 years and reunited with his first wife Antonina (1982). Loving father of Eric (Mich̬le) Fretz and step-father of Tim (Debbie) Cooper, David (Thanasha) Cooper, Bill Cooper, Marianne (Patrick) Schmitt and the late Donna Cooper (2009). Beloved brother of Eldon (Freda) Fretz. Cherished grandfather of Anna, Katherine, Matthew, Steven, Jessica, Stephanie, Shannon, Cheryl (2011), Alexander, William, Christopher and Alexandra; and great-grandfather of Leah, James, Zoe, Madeleine, Liam, Sophie and Alivia. He received a B.A. in Psychology in 1955 from the University of Western Ontario, winning a gold medal for his academic achievements upon graduation and went on to obtain a Degree of Medicine, graduating cum laude in 1959. Also in 1959, he was awarded a certificate of merit for his achievement, proficiency and promise in the field of Dental Medicine from the American Academy of Dental Medicine. He completed his internship at Detroit Memorial Hospital in 1960 and his residency in Psychiatry in 1963 from Wayne State University College of Medicine, Lafayette Clinic. He was awarded his specialist certificate from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 1964 and was an honorary lifetime member of the Canadian Medical Association. He was an associate member of the American Psychiatric Association since 1965 and was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha honorary fraternity. Norman was a recipient of numerous awards and accolades including Alumnus of the Year Award (2000) from the Niagara Christian Collegiate in recognition of outstanding contribution in his chosen field of service. He had a successful practice in psychiatry in Windsor, North Bay (where he was Staff Psychiatrist and Director of Medical Education, for the Ministry of Health), Timmins and Guelph. He was loyal to medicine, and was committed to the good of the sick. After 57 years of medical practice, he retired in February 2016. As a true epicurean, Norman knew how to enjoy what life had to offer. He had a love of music and was an active member of choirs in Windsor, Guelph, North Bay and Sarasota, Florida; and enjoyed composing music, playing the guitar and the harmonica. He also had interests in historic vehicles, woodworking and photography. Throughout his life he was an avid lover of the outdoors with a deep respect for nature and enjoyed gardening, horseback riding and winter sports. Travelling was also one of his beloved activities, which gave him the opportunity to discover more about the world and meet people from various cultures. True to his erudite nature, he always wanted to learn more and how he could be of service to those around him. His warm and generous spirit will be missed by his extended family and many good friends in Canada, United States (Kansas Рwhere he was born РCalifornia, Pennsylvania, Florida), Germany, Poland, Russia and France.
