ELIZABETH(LIZL) ASZKANAZY

ELIZABETH (LIZL) ASZKANAZY Passed away on January 21, 2017 in her 97th year of pneumonia. Born in Vienna to Simon and Anna Aszkanazy. She was the older sister of Clarisse (Lore) Dolman, who predeceased her in 1987. Elizabeth fled Vienna with her mother and sister upon Nazi invasion, eventually arriving in Vancouver, her father tragically lost his life in he Vienna Detention Center. Elizabeth was married to the British Authority Anthony Rhodes from 1944 to 1952. She lived to varying periods in Canada (Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto) the United States and Italy working as a Translator in Italian, French, German and English. Her passions included politics, opera and human and animal rights, as demonstrated by her volunteer and financial support to many related organizations. She was a particularly vocal advocate against mistreatment of animals, perhaps most eloquently demonstrated by her insistence on a vegan diet. She loved a wild garden and would not allow her trees to be trimmed! Her political interest led her to run for the Green Party in 1988 (Toronto – Broadview). She was able to remain living in her North York home until the end of her life. Aided in large measure by daily visiting home care nurses and especially by her longtime trusted friend, Rosemarie Salen, to whom her closest surviving family, niece Jennifer Roosma and nephews, John and Peter Dolman are immensely grateful. Elizabeth was interred in Holy Blossom Memorial Park on January 22, 2017. Memorial donations may be made to any Animal Rights Organizations of choice.
