GERALDISRAELSTAM Ph.D.

ISRAELSTAM, Ph.D., GERALD January 19, 1929 – July 30, 2017 The family and friends of Gerald Israelstam mark with sadness and fond memories his passing on July 30, 2017 at the age of 88. Gerry was a loving father to Gregory, caring grandfather to Sam and Dante and devoted husband to Sally until her death in 2005. In recent years, Gerry was a cherished companion and friend to Mona Jaspan and was especially grateful to Mona’s family for making him part of their lives. Gerry was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. His commitment to social justice ultimately required that he leave South Africa because of his opposition to apartheid. His dedication to science and learning led him to a Ph.D. in botany from the University of London and a long teaching and research career at the University of Toronto. Despite a battle with dementia in his last years, Gerry maintained his gentle humour and his respect for others. Gerry died peacefully, in his sleep in his retirement community in Ottawa, close to his son and grandchildren. Special thanks to the staff and residents of the Villagia in the Glebe retirement home in Ottawa for welcoming him into their community and ensuring his comfort during his brief stay there. A celebration and remembrance of Gerry’s life will be held at the R.S. Kane Funeral Home, 6150 Yonge Street, Toronto, on Thursday, August 3rd and Friday, August 4th from 6 to 8 p.m. All are welcome to attend. Gerry’s remains will be interred at the York Cemetery and Funeral Centre at 160 Beecroft Road in Toronto. Memorial donations in Gerry’s name may be made to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, Amnesty International or Farm Radio International.
