GIANNAALDROVANDI

GIANNA ALDROVANDI Gianna was the loving wife of Louis Aldrovandi for almost 61 years. Louis had come to Canada in 1951. After three years of long distance betrothal, Gianna came to Canada in 1956 to marry. They had 3 children, Mark (Joan), Grace (Bill) and Nancy. Nancy’s illness and death at age 24 altered everything for the family. It was only with the love and support of relatives and friends that Gianna and her family came through. Adoring grandmother of Andrea, Jacqueline, Marco, Gracie and Michael. Sister of Enzo (Franca), Lucy (Mike) and Tonino (Adriana). Gianna loved and was dearly loved by all of the Aldrovandi family – Enzo (Augusta), Gianni (Bruna), Lino (Joanne), Maria (Poli), Elena (Viterbo) and Anselmo (Cornelia), with whom they spent many months together on their yearly trips to Italy. She was especially close to her cousin Guido Bruni, who also came to Canada in 1956. With his wife Francoise, Guido also raised his family in Canada. She will also be missed by many nephews and nieces, as well as great-nephews and nieces. Much gratitude to Maria and Angelo Pereira, who for many years managed their house and lives. Until 1968, Gianna had to run the family in various locales as Louis worked on a succession of hydroelectric construction projects in Northern Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, New Zealand and Colombia. Many members of the construction team and their families also moved along with Gianna and her family, forging lifetime friendships. In 1968, they moved back to Toronto and Louis started his heavy equipment business Liftking, which grew to enjoy tremendous success. Gianna helped Louis with the business in its critical early days and raised the children. Her son Mark worked with Louis for years at Liftking, contributing greatly to the success of the company. Grace became a physician and has enjoyed tremendous success in academic medicine in the U.S. She and her husband Bill, also a physician, live in Los Angeles with their two children. Gianna was a passionate bridge player, enjoying all the friends and experiences it provided to her. From the 1970s, Gianna and Louis entertained many visitors in their home, including long term friends and many family members. In her advancing years, her daughter-in-law Joan became a tower of strength, helping to coordinate all medical appointments and caregivers. May God bless all Gianna’s family and friends who were touched her life, her example and her perspectives. Gianna’s last three decades of life were spent mostly in good health but were also punctuated by her intermittent battles with breast cancer, a disease which ultimately claimed her life on March 24, 2017. Gianna’s good cheer and quiet but steely determination throughout these battles has inspired all of us who survive her. Near the end, her major concern was for her husband Louis, who died just six days before Gianna. Visitation will be held at Highland Funeral Home (Warden and Sheppard) on March 26th between 2-4 p.m. and March 27th from 7-9 p.m. with prayers at 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held at St Bartholomew Church, Scarborough, on March 28th at 10 a.m. Burial will follow the funeral at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Sunnybrook Foundation in the Aldrovandi name (sunnybrook.ca/foundation).
