Gwendolyn Jane TREMBLAY

(nee YOUNG)

March 31, 1926 (Ironbound Island, NS) – September 11, 2016 (Toronto, ON)

Gwendolyn passed away peacefully at Kensington Gardens in Toronto on Sunday, September 11, 2016 at age 90. She was surrounded by her children. She was daughter to Percy Young and Eva (nee Levy) Young, the widow of Lt. Col. Réal Tremblay, sister to the late Beatrice Finck, Ina Zinck, Stanley Young, and Doreen Publicover. She is survived by her sister, Clara Jennex, her children, Karla, Michael, and Marc, her grandchildren, Malcolm, Julianna and Meagan, her daughter-in-law, Susan Bessonette and her son-in-law, Robert Weir. Gwendolyn was born into a family of fishermen on an idyllic island off the coast of Nova Scotia. She was a stellar student in a one room school house. She would go on to teach school and eventually became a nurse. She later joined the military where she met Réal while they were both stationed in Marville, France. She was devastated when he passed away in 1992 due to a sudden stroke. Gwendolyn was an enormous presence in her children’s lives. They will always miss her. We thank the caregivers at Kensington Gardens who were gentle and attentive with Gwendolyn. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Covenant House, one of Gwendolyn’s favourite charities. Gwendolyn will make her final journey home to Nova Scotia where a funeral will take place at a later date.
